17078 My first show was NYE 1981 at HJK and it was a spectacular show with 4 sets and 5 hours of music. This was my last and the difference between the two was shocking. It was a beautiful, warm and sunny fall Sunday. I had a lawn pass and just wandered around Shoreline looking at all the people and listening to the music but by the time they got to jack_a_roe I knew something was different and that was Jerry's voice. It was so old and worn-out. Tired. He sounded like he was exhausted. I remember thinking to myself, he is dying. Not only that but the music was different too. Mechanical. Wooden. Just notes and beats, no real life left. There were a few good songs: Tennessee Jed, Brown Eyed Women, Throwing Stones and especially Little Red Rooster. And the energy of the crowd was great too, one of the best in 1994, that is the reason for the 3 rating. But nonetheless I walked away sad. I knew it was the end. That the best was in the past. Most of the rest is pretty average, except for the So Many Roads and post space, which are incredable. The taper does a nice job, but the Naks cant compete with the Schoeps & DSDBs of this era. I know others may stake claim to Vegas 92. The crowd was in shock after this version. A well played show throughout, especially since there are no songs in the second set open to extended jamming-(playin, estimated, ect) Gave us hope for the rest of the year, especially after a lackluster summer. I've looked high and low for a version that kicks as much ass and takes as many names as this one. The singing of the verses is pretty standard good - Jerry only stumbles once or twice. But things go off the charts with the ending (or what usually is the ending) vocal. Jerry really reaches deep, changes things up a bit "so many roads to fill my soul"... and then, blam! a HUGE guitar solo that just about lifts the tent off, and then _another_ vocal chorus to ease things down. WHEW! check it out and the cuz it was so good and you enjoyed it again - check it out again. If you know of a better - let me know... btw - 7/9/95, 10/1/94, 5/21/95 are all nice, but this one is spectacular! My wife and I enjoyed the show greatly, but we also had an amazing experience. At the mid-break we laid back to relax and stare at the sky. We started playing a game we enjoy wherein we show each other images in the clouds. After a bit I realized there was an amazing image encompassing all of the clouds and the entire sky. I was the image of a winged Indian dancer from the rear balancing on one leg with arms outstretched. We were pretty blown away at the 'best' cloud formation we had ever seen. After the show we wandered through the t-shirt stalls and were completely flabbergasted to see the image of 'Indian Joe' on a t-shirt for the first time. It was the exact image we had seen in the sky but from the front. It was the most intense evidence of 'something more' that I have ever personally experienced and I'm not generally inclined to 'spiritual' experiences. I wish I had taken a picture of the sky but I hope you believe me that the universe was paying attention to that show! Peace. The sound is average to slightly above for an audience recording from this period. The massive cut out of Space is unfortunate, and someone out there probably chopped some music to fit this onto 2 discs. (a reminder: doing this makes you a bad person, no matter what else you might do in life!) At least it cuts back in before the Days Between intro. I remembered the 'so many roads' being great and there were not too many dry eyes in the house after it; and this is the same case now hearing it 12 years later. Truth be told, as tears stream down my face at htis moment, that this rendition of 'so many roads' is what "it" is all about-in my opinion. If you listen, you will find sincerety and the haunting nature fo Jerry's huge personality sitting right next to you and you will say "why did you have to go?"....HUGE song and the licks on the guitar and PERFECT. Every sound every wift of note is precisely played and builds tremendously. This show was very special for me as it signaled what I sensed would be "the end soon'. I just felt it. And 11 months later my fears were realized. This is an emotional song...bottom line. Great sound quality. Crank it up! Plus most people give almost any show a 4 or 5 star rating. This makes it impossible to differentiate between the great shows and the better than average shows. I have yet to hear a better So Many Roads elsewhere. During the last two choruses you can hear Jerry's soul actually finding "so many roads to ease (his) soul." Jerry got most of the verses right during this performance, the backup vocals couldn't be better and instrumentally the band is right there with Jerry during the solos. This show will forever be recorded in my memory. It was the first time I ever attended a show at the great Shoreline Amphitheater. Sadly, it was also the last time I saw the Grateful Dead there. Ever since I have been to Shoreline lots of times, mostly to see Phish, but this Grateful Dead Fall show I will never forget. Listening back to it now is sure a joy.
